Your first shipment doesn't have to be a whole barrel. Send a single box of clothes, gifts or essentials to Kenya — by sea or air, fully insured, and tracked the whole way.
By sea, a box is billed on its size — a medium box (18×18×16 in, ~3 ft³) is about $90 at $30/ft³, and a large box (24×18×18 in, ~4.5 ft³) about $135. By air, it's billed on weight from $7.99/lb ($50 minimum), arriving in 7–14 business days. Mandatory insurance is 2% of declared value.
One tip that saves money: sea freight has a $100 minimum per shipment, so a single small box on its own costs $100 regardless. Send a few boxes together — or fill a barrel — and you only pay for the combined volume.
Standard sea rate, $30 per cubic foot. Your exact price comes from measured dimensions.
| Box | Size | Billed volume | From (Standard sea) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medium box | 18 × 18 × 16 in | 3 ft³ | $90* |
| Large box | 24 × 18 × 18 in | 4.5 ft³ | $135 |

*A single medium box is below the $100 sea minimum, so on its own it's $100 — combine boxes to get past the minimum. Excludes Kenyan duties (Standard) and mandatory insurance.
It's small, light, urgent or valuable — documents, medicine, a phone, a birthday gift. Air is 7–14 business days, billed by weight from $7.99/lb.
It's bulky or heavy and not urgent — clothes, shoes, food, household goods. Sea is far cheaper for size, arriving in 10–14 weeks.

Ocean and air cargo gets handled many times. A sturdy box with reinforced corners survives the journey far better than a thin carton.
Empty space invites crushing. Pack soft items around the contents so nothing shifts, and don't leave the box half-empty — you still pay for its full size.
